Battlefield Boulevard plans: public meeting Thursday
Plus Friday's mail-ballot deadline, leaf pickup rules and two local dates.
A proposed Battlefield Boulevard lane project is up for public discussion Thursday. Before the week ends, there is also a mail-ballot request deadline to check.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 | GREENBRIER LIBRARY
Review the Battlefield Boulevard lane proposal
The city is holding a public information meeting Thursday, 4-6 p.m., at Greenbrier Library, 1214 Volvo Parkway, about a proposed continuous right-turn lane on Battlefield Boulevard between Volvo Parkway and Walmart Way. Residents can review the plans and give the city feedback. The meeting notice is an invitation to discuss a proposal; it does not announce that road construction starts Thursday.
What to do: If you use this stretch of Battlefield Boulevard, check the meeting notice and bring your questions about the proposed layout. Use the city's project links for the plans and any meeting updates.

Request a mailed ballot by Friday's deadline
Chesapeake's voter guide says the registrar must receive an application for a ballot by mail by 5 p.m. Friday, October 23, for the November 3 election. This is the deadline to request a ballot, not the deadline to return a completed one. The guide lists separate return rules and also explains in-person early-voting options, including the satellite locations noted in Monday's issue.
What to do: If you intend to vote by mail, use the official voter guide and its state portal link now. Check your own application status through the official portal rather than assuming that starting a request completed it.
FALL CLEANUP | CURBSIDE YARD WASTE
Use clear bags for leaves and light yard waste
The city's yard-waste guidance, updated October 13, calls for clear 35-gallon plastic bags for leaves, pine straw and grass clippings. Put them out on your regular trash day; the city says no advance call is needed for these bags. The limit is 30 bags per household per week now, rising to 50 during November and December. Dirt, rocks, mulch and sod should not go into the bags. Larger limbs and other bulk yard debris follow a separate pickup process.
What to do: Before buying bags or clearing the yard, check the city's full guidance. Keep leaves and grass out of ditches and storm drains. For larger debris, request bulk pickup using the city's instructions.

Western Branch's first planning workshop is next week
The first Western Branch Area Plan workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, 5:30-7 p.m., at Western Branch Middle School, 4201 Hawksley Drive. The city is asking residents to identify what they value, what needs improvement and their priorities for the area's future. This is an early planning workshop: the city says the feedback will help develop the vision, goals and preliminary recommendations.
What to do: Save the date if Western Branch is part of your daily life. If you cannot attend, the city says an online survey is scheduled to launch October 27 and remain open for several weeks. Check the project page then; do not assume it is open today.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 | CENTRAL LIBRARY
A free class on decluttering at Central Library
The city calendar lists Swedish Death Cleaning for Saturday, 1-2:30 p.m., in Central Library's Small Business Studio. The class focuses on sorting possessions, preserving meaningful memories and simplifying the home. The listing describes it as free and says registration is recommended but not required.
What to do: Check the library's Saturday listing for updates and registration details before going. This is a class listing, not a promise of individual organizing services or a guaranteed seat.
