Chesapeake weekend: solar viewing, crafts and a Sunday market
Today's ballot request deadline, three weekend options and two dates for next week.
A free solar-viewing session, a registered craft workshop and a Sunday market offer three ways to plan the weekend. First, a voting deadline that falls today.

Mail-ballot requests are due by 5 p.m. today
If you plan to vote by mail in the November 3 election, Chesapeake's registrar must receive your application by 5 p.m. Friday, October 23. This is the request deadline, not the deadline for returning a completed ballot. The city guide also lists October 23 as the deadline to register or update registration, with same-day registration and provisional voting available afterward. Early in-person voting remains an option, including weekend hours in the official guide.
What to do: Use the city guide and its official state portal links today. Confirm your request or registration status through the registrar or state portal; starting a request is not proof it was received.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 | ELIZABETH RIVER PARK
Free solar viewing, if the weather cooperates
Saturday SUNday is scheduled for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Elizabeth River Park, 1400 Elizabeth River Way. The city lists the event as free and open to the public, with safe solar observing led by the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers. It is explicitly weather dependent, so treat the calendar listing as a plan to confirm rather than a guarantee.
What to do: Call 757-382-6411 before leaving to confirm the event. Follow the organizers' safe-viewing instructions; this is an organized observing session, not an invitation to look directly at the Sun.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 | NORTHWEST RIVER PARK
A $5 nature-inspired jewelry workshop
Spooky Jewelry is scheduled for 3-4:30 p.m. at Northwest River Park & Campground, 1733 Indian Creek Road. The city describes making earrings, bracelets and necklaces with natural materials. The listed price is $5 per person, with supplies provided. Registration is required; the event page does not establish that a place is still available for everyone who wants one.
What to do: Open the city's registration link and check current availability before making plans. Do not assume this is a drop-in activity or that admission to the park reserves a workshop place.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25 | GREAT BRIDGE
Waterway Market runs 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The city calendar lists Waterway Market at Great Bridge Village for Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at Battlefield Park South, 120 Reservation Road. Its description includes local vendors, produce, artisan goods, food trucks and prepared foods. The listing places the market in its Sunday season through November 22; it does not promise a particular vendor or product will be there this week.
What to do: Check the city listing and its organizer link for any last-minute changes before you go. Use the Reservation Road address for this market rather than assuming every Battlefield Park event uses the same entrance.
NEXT WEEK | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28
City Hall opens at 9 a.m. Wednesday
City Hall is scheduled to delay opening until 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, for an employee fire drill. The city says other city offices will maintain normal operations. This is a change to City Hall's opening time, not a citywide closure or a change to all public services.
What to do: If you need an in-person City Hall visit Wednesday morning, plan for the 9 a.m. opening and check the notice again before traveling. For another office, verify that office's own hours.
FOLLOWING THE STORY | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27
Western Branch's planning workshop is Tuesday
The first Western Branch Area Plan workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, 5:30-7 p.m., at Western Branch Middle School, 4201 Hawksley Drive. Residents can share what they value and what needs improvement. This is an early input stage, not approval of a development proposal. The city says an online survey will launch October 27 and remain open for several weeks.
What to do: Save the date and bring specific priorities or questions. If you cannot attend, return to the project page on or after October 27 for the survey; do not assume it is open today.
