Fall yard waste: Chesapeake bag limits and pickup rules

Current city guidance

Fall cleanup has a seasonal limit: Chesapeake allows more bags in November and December. Check the bag and pickup rules before setting leaves at the curb.

Bagged leaves: what to set out

Use clear 35-gallon plastic bags for leaves, pine straw and grass clippings. The weekly household limit is 30 bags, rising to 50 during November and December.

Set bags out on your regular trash day. No advance pickup request is needed for these bags. Keep dirt, rocks, mulch and sod out of them.

Larger debris needs a different pickup

For limbs, bushes and tree cuttings, request bulk pickup through the city. Check its size and placement instructions before making a pile.

An alternative to bagging

The city also suggests leaving leaves and grass clippings on the lawn or mulching them. Do not rake or blow them into ditches or storm drains.
